On 25 and 26 October 2025, SP Optometry (DOPT) students participated in Neighbourhood Health Services held at Toa Payoh Central Community Club, in collaboration with NUS healthcare students. The event successfully attracted 215 participants, many of whom were seniors or residents living in that area. The students conducted essential eye assessments such as visual acuity testing and eye pressure checks. Beyond that, they also offered vision related advice on proper eye care, the importance of early detection, and frequent eye examinations.

Following this, on 8 and 9 November 2025, the students continued their outreach efforts through the Active Ageing Advocates programme at Senja-Cashew Community Club, in partnership with NUS Medicine school. This large-scale initiative drew an impressive 670 participants, reflecting strong community interest in maintaining health and wellness. The students provided eye screenings tailored to the needs of older adults, who are more prone to age-related vision conditions. They helped participants understand their visual needs, manage their vision concerns and encourage them to have annual eye examinations or earlier if the needs arise.
Across both events, the dedication, professionalism, and compassion of the SP Optometry students were evident. Their contributions enhanced public awareness of eye health, supported early detection of vision issues, and strengthened inter-institutional collaboration in promoting healthier, more informed communities.
Year 2 Student, Shariffah Nabilah Chishty: “Taking part in the event was a highly meaningful experience that gave me valuable exposure to community eye care. Through vision screenings and conversations with the public, I observed how easily eye health can be overlooked. Educating individuals, particularly older adults, on the importance of regular eye examinations reinforced the critical role of early detection in preventing avoidable vision loss. As a student, this opportunity enhanced my understanding of community needs and strengthened my commitment to promoting lifelong eye health.”
