Supporting the Next Generation of Optometrists Through Alumni Mentorship

In conjunction with World Optometry Week, the SP Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) organised an alumni engagement session on 27 March 2026 to support fresh graduates and early-career optometrists as they transition into professional practice.

The session focused on navigating the optometry landscape, with particular emphasis on preparing for provisional licensing under the Optometrists and Opticians Board (OOB). A panel of DOPT alumni, Iryn Gan, Douglas Wong, Ken Tong and Jerome Tan, shared their career journeys and offered practical insights into the diverse pathways within the profession.

Drawing from their experiences in clinical practice and the wider eye care industry, the speakers discussed workplace expectations, building professional confidence, and making informed career decisions. A key highlight was the sharing of OOB provisional licensing tips, including the importance of having a supportive and committed mentor.

Beyond professional development, the speakers also shared their involvement in outreach and vision care initiatives, inspiring graduates to give back to the community and contribute to public eye health.

The session concluded with a lively question-and-answer segment, reinforcing the strong sense of mentorship and support within the SP Optometry alumni community.
