Optometry Students Explore Careers, Industry and Sustainability

In September 2026, first-year students from the Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) took part in a series of Education and Career Guidance + Sustainability (ECGS) learning journeys, organised in partnership with, Menicon Singapore, Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and W Optics. The initiative was designed to help students gain meaningful insight into the profession, broaden their understanding of career pathways, and appreciate how sustainability is becoming increasingly vital in healthcare and manufacturing.

At Menicon Singapore, students were introduced to the precision-driven world of contact lens production. They toured the advanced facility and observed the processes of material preparation, moulding, and quality control that ensure the safety and reliability of every lens. The visit also emphasised Menicon’s sustainability efforts, such as the Miru 1day Flat Pack, which reduces plastic use through innovative packaging. For many, this was an eye-opening experience that showcased how industry players are working to meet patient needs while addressing global environmental challenges.

The SNEC offered students a closer look at optometry in a clinical and hospital-based context. Through interactive activities, they learned how ocular conditions can affect vision and the importance of early intervention, reinforcing the connection to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being. They toured a range of specialised clinics, from paediatric to low vision, as well as the Singapore Eye Research Institute and national eye bank, while networking with optometrists who shared their experiences in patient care, co-management with ophthalmologists, and clinical research. This gave students a holistic view of optometry’s impact on both individual patients and society at large. As student Yu Xi share, “The journey to SNEC gave me an important opportunity to understand how optometry functions within a hospital setting. During the introduction session, I gained a deeper understanding of the different groups of professionals who work together to form a strong SNEC team. One line from the talk that I will always keep in mind is, "Be a sponge" — always stay curious and hungry for knowledge. This learning journey has inspired me to continue learning and growing as a future optometry professional.”

Meanwhile, students visiting W Optics gain first-hand insights into the dynamic role of optometrists in community eye practice. Through exposure to state-of-the-art instruments for primary eye care, specialty contact lens fitting and dispensing, and various myopia control options, students connected their foundational learning with real-world clinical practice. Conversations with W Optics optometrists also gave students a clearer understanding of the professional responsibilities of community optometrists and the diverse career pathways within the profession. The visit encouraged students to appreciate the breadth of optometry and develop an early understanding of how optometrists contribute to accessible, patient-centred eye care in the community.
