Technology, Innovation And Enterprise (TIE)

Technology & Innovation Centres (TIC) promotes multi-disciplinary & cross-functional projects between Singapore Polytechnic and its business and industry partners. It positions Singapore Polytechnic as the source of technology, innovation and information for the business and industry partners. In the long run, this will enable the business and industry partners to move up the value-chain.

The Technology, Innovation And Enterprise

Department of Technology, Innovation and Enterprise (TIE) provides strategic overview of industry-linked R&D projects and collaborations in Singapore Polytechnic. TIE seeks to support industrial relation needs through successful commercialisation of R&D. It includes intellectual property management of SP technologies which translates to commercialisable IP, eventually resulting in technology licensing and creation of spin-offs.

Our Mission

To unify SP Technology Group in Innovating and Creating technologies to be Human-centric and to chart SP Technology Roadmap and Strategy Plans to fulfil this objective for contribution to the Industry and SP’s internal teaching and learning.

Our Vision

To lead SP Technology Group to be Human-centric in the areas of “Improving Quality of Life” and “Human Advancement” in technology and innovation excellence benefiting people and society.

Partners

We welcome all forms of collaboration with industry partners. To promote multi-disciplinary and cross-functional projects with the industry, TIC work closely with the other technology centres within SP. You can collaborate with us through: Research & Development Technology transfer & commercialisation Consultancy services Training and development Others

Our Roles

TIC enables Singapore Polytechnic to play the following dual roles.

For Institution:

  1. Develop staff capability in new technologies
  2. Provide an authentic learning environment to train solution-minded students
  3. Benefit Singapore’s workforce through conducting continuing education and training

For Industry:

  1. Develop novel technologies and solutions
  2. Provide resources and capabilities to accelerate such developments
  3. Identify interdisciplinary and translational research projects
  4. Create technology transfer and commercialisation opportunities
  5. Assist industry move up the value chain

Apart from the TICs, we are segmented into several teams namely:

  1. Planning & Partnerships – supports the TICs and the wider SP research community in project planning, technology transfer and commercialisation and provides administrative support for internal and external grants; supports the TICs and the wider SP research community in IP Management and Legal matters;
  2. Operations – supports the TICs in project and budget management; and manages Innovillage and supports the TICs on infrastructure & IT matters.

Licensing

Singapore Polytechnic partners industry players by collaborating in projects, as well as through offering technology licensing opportunity. Take a look at some of our technology licensing opportunities now.

Ammonia Odour Free and Ammonia
The newly developed ammonia odour free PdNi alloy deposition solution reduces the use of ammonia and ammonia-based chemicals by replacing portion of these key components in conventional solutions by the use of other suitable complexes, resulting in ammonia odour free with reduced palladium consumption, manufacturing and disposal cost. This IP will be useful for the electronic components (e.g. connectors) which is miniaturized through the years as less consumption of precious metal (palladium) and thinner deposit with maintainable performance.

Lixiviant for High Extraction of Silver from Silver-Coated Solid Wastes
The lixiviant developed offers a more user and environmentally friendly means to efficiently extract silver selectively from silver-coated solid waste. The formulation is free of cyanide and omits the use of any strong acids, making it relatively easy to handle and eliminates the safety, health and environmental problems associated with the use and post-treatment of conventional lixiviants. Hydrometallurgy offers a way to recycle silver at a relatively low cost and smaller scale. With the employment of an effective lixiviant that is able to achieve high and selective extraction of silver from these secondary sources, it ensures that the most value is drawn from them. Additionally, the omission of strong acids and cyanide in the lixiviant eliminates the need for costly safety infrastructure and treatment of toxic waste streams generated.

Low Energy Method for Producing Biodiesel
Our technology utilizes a low energy air bubbling process – where air bubbles surround the oil molecules – which not only enables a preferential reaction, but also prevents competition for the base catalyst. This leads to an enhanced rate of biodiesal formation, thereby aiding in the separation of biodiesel from glycerin and gives rise to a higher throughput in biodiesel yield.

Mobile Augmented Reality Instructional Manuals (MARIM)

MARIM is a practical system which uses mobile devices for interactive manuals. The system utilizes AR Technology to provide visual instructions overlaid in the real environment for the trainee. The trainer is allowed to create these AR instructions using the editor provided by the application. Images are captured by using phones/tablets and provide visual instructions such as interest regions, text, and action animations. The system also utilizes the existing object detection and tracking algorithms to identify the step scene and retrieve the respective instruction to be displayed on the mobile device.

Hydrating Cream
Hydration plays an important role in maintaining the metabolism, enzyme activity, mechanical properties, appearance and barrier function of the skin.

Singapore has a tropical climate that prevails throughout the year. Battling with the constant switch between high humidity, hot outdoor weather and dry in-door cold air-conditioning environment decreases the skin response to external changes. Hence, decreases the hydration level in skin attributing to the overall skin barrier recovery to delay, and premature aging. In our research work, a formula of moisture cream is developed.

Nano Glass Coating for Energy Saving Applications
The invention is a nano glass coating which can be applied directly onto glass panels, and can be used on glass surfaces with complex shapes. The coating is able to reject more than 90% of Ultraviolet radiation and Infra-Red radiation above 1400nm wavelength while allowing the transmission of at least 60% of the visible light to be transmitted through. This allows the reduction of the total solar energy transmission by more than 50% as compared to untreated clear glass, and an additional 8% reduction when compared to commercially available solar films.
