Learning isn’t just about being in the classroom, Tan Choon Shian

10 Sep 2014

Challenge.gov.sg, 1 Sep 2014 - SP Principal and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Tan Choon Shian, talks about the different ways of learning and the aim to create future-ready, inspired learners in a profile article. Mr Tan recalls his experience working and learning on board a navy ship as a National Cadet Corps cadet and working part-time as a cleaner at a Japanese bathhouse when he was studying in Japan on a government scholarship. The experiences taught him that learning is beyond the classroom too. Mr Tan also shared the process and experiences on the year-long dialogue session with SP staff on the polytechnic’s vision. The exercise helped SP win the 2014 Public Service Best Practice Award for Organisation Development. SP’s advice to lecturers on using Social Media to engage with students was also mentioned and Mr Tan also touched on his social media habits and practices. He also gave an insight on SP’s new hiring practices and how the institution is trying to look more at the relevant skills for the job instead of paper qualifications.
