Young people volunteering: an important driving force for community development

25 May 2023

Article by SP Diploma in Business Administration student and ACER Jalen Goh Jun Hui discussed how with the development of the times, more and more youth are starting to contribute their time and talents to voluntary service activities that positively impact their communities. Youth have a lot of ideas and creativity and are constantly trying new ways to help solve social problems. At the same time, youth can also help pass on the culture and values of the community and inspire more people to participate in volunteer service. However, there are also problems with volunteering. For example, some youths may only participate in volunteering out of interest or academic requirements, lacking real enthusiasm and a sense of responsibility. In addition, the management of some voluntary service organisations is not standardised enough, and they lack effective supervision and evaluation mechanisms, resulting in the lack of practical effects of some voluntary service activities. Jalen also shared that government and social organisations should strengthen the support and management of voluntary services, and provide more resources and opportunities to attract more youths to volunteer.
