Gift of Sight Surabaya 2017

29 Jul 2017

From 9 to 21 June 2017, a team comprising of 22 SP Optometry students and two lecturers travelled to Surabaya, East Java to conduct vision screenings for the community.  A total of 1775 villagers across 13 villages were screened, and the team dispensed 354 sunglasses, 1247 ready-made reading glasses and 98 on-the-spot prescription spectacles. In addition, 198 pairs of high powered spectacle lenses will be made in Singapore and sent to the villagers.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to help others in need, and it has been a meaningful and fulfilling experience for me and the team. The sincerity we felt from the villagers was palpable. I have learnt to be more appreciative and grateful of the many luxuries I have in Singapore. Through the various challenges encountered during this trip, I have refined my communication and optometry-related skills. I believe this will help me in becoming a better optometrist in the future.”
