CLS students learned about sustainability through an overseas study trip

12 Dec 2023

The School of Chemical & Life Sciences (CLS) organised a 1-day Overseas Study Trip (OST) to KLK Edible Oils Sdn Bhd (KLK Oleo) in Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru, Malaysia on 11 Dec 2023.The trip welcomed 30 students and three staff, exposing them to KLK Oleo, a global leader in producing high-quality, sustainable oleochemicals used in various industries. From basic to specialised products like surfactants and phytonutrients, their offerings served applications ranging from personal care to industrial chemicals. KLK Oleo showcased their commitment to Reliable, Integrated, Sustainable, and Efficient practices during the visit.

The OST aimed to expose CLS students to the sustainable application in KLK Oleo and how sciences were applied in the regulatory bodies, food and nutrition, pharmaceuticals, materials, perfumery, and cosmetic industry. The visit provided students with a real-world example of a company that made use of sustainable and renewable raw materials, offering a start-to-end display of sustainability in their operation. After the seminar, the students also took a tour of the manufacturing plants to understand how industrial chemicals were processed.

"The visit was an eye-opening experience as we were able to have a first-hand look at the processes involved in the refining of crude palm oil into different fractions, which can then be used for different applications."
