SP Optometry-HOYA Collaboration for Vision Examination

11 Apr 2024

13 March 2024 - 13 students and one staff member from the SP Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) collaborated with HOYA to conduct vision screenings for approximately 45 children aged seven to 21 at Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home.

Each DOPT student worked together with an optometrist from HOYA and performed tasks such as history taking, lensometer, auto-refraction, visual acuity tests, and dispensing of spectacles. Optometrists played a crucial role in this vision screening, ensuring that the children received quality eye care. Through attentive examination and interaction with the children, the optometrists could ascertain from the children’s responses whether they needed to commence wearing glasses, obtain new ones, or undergo further evaluation by eye specialists. On top of the eye tests, the optometrists raised awareness about the importance of good eye health and provided the children with tips on how to maintain optimal eye care.

This vision screening enabled the children to receive the appropriate assistance to maintain good eye health and vision, while also equipping them with knowledge about eye health.

The DOPT students were able to gain valuable experience through this vision screening. It was a great opportunity and exposure for the students to work together with HOYA and the children.
