SP Optometry and Guide Dogs Singapore partner to conduct vision screening

14 Nov 2023

SP Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) partnered with Guide Dogs Singapore (GDS) to conduct vision screening at the Inspiring Lives Without Sight community event at Parkway Parade on 8 October 2023. The event aimed to normalise interaction between sighted and visually impaired people through education and curated activities, as well as to influence the general perception of visually impaired people. The event’s launch was graced by Guest-of-honour, Mr Eric Chua, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth and the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

The vision screening initiative was made possible by the dedication of 30 DOPT student volunteers and 3 faculty staff. Throughout the day, these committed individuals conducted vision screenings for a total of 95 members of the public, ranging from the young to the elderly. This event not only served the community but also provided an invaluable learning experience for our students.

Both second-year and third-year students had distinct roles, allowing them to gain practical experience and contribute to the success of the event. Second-year students had the opportunity to actively screen for eye abnormalities, directly impacting the health and well-being of the attendees. Simultaneously, third-year students played a vital role by guiding and mentoring their junior peers, fostering a sense of teamwork and responsibility.
