ABE Students in CIPTA Award Competition 2017 with their project on “Green Microfiltration for Organic Wastewater”

Since 2015 the Crown Prince CIPTA Award competition, organised by Brunei Darussalam, has been opened to ASEAN participants. The theme for CIPTA (Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement) 2017 is “Innovation for Sustainable Economy”
The aim of the competition is to encourage and to develop a culture for inventing and innovating in Brunei Darussalam. The objectives of CIPTA are to:
• inspire the youth and the public to develop creative products, processes or technologies for national and ASEAN aspirations;
• recognise and award creative talents in the country as well as at the ASEAN level;
• motivate and instil the culture of science, engineering and technology to the youth and the public;
• foster collaborative linkages within Brunei Darussalam and between Brunei and the ASEAN region.
Under ASEAN category cluster, there are 2 categories, the New Invention & Innovation category and Young Inventor category for experienced researchers and tertiary students respectively. One of two DCEB teams, supervised by Dr Handojo Djati Utomo
and Dr Liu Qishan, was selected to present their results in the final competition at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB).
In 2017, 4 (four) finalist groups with very diverse topics from Malaysia (1), Singapore including SP and NUS High (2), Vietnam (1) under Young Inventor category, competed for the only single prize of B$3000 in this category. No winning team was selected
by the panel of judges, consisting of academics from local universities and also professionals from ASEAN countries.
Due to the value of research in this competition, good team work, aspiration, resilience, intense communication and time management between supervisors and students and also among students in a team are the key factors of success. In addition, under
SP(TIEFA- R223) r& D Fund, the students were able to continue in developing their work done in ABE Environmental Lab.
The students were also trained to develop their oral presentation skills by Ms Yoke Ling (CASS) and Ms Felia Wong (SPI).
One of the personal reflection from the student team: “It was truly an eye-opener as it was my first time in Brunei. We managed to visit and explore the local places of interests there such as the Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque and the Royal Regalia
Museum. Being able to understand Brunei’s history as well as their culture was truly fruitful. We also had the opportunity to visit the civil engineering labs at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB). The facilities and lessons there were very
like those in Singapore such as the uniform channel flow and the unconfined compression tests”
