Diploma Civil Engineering (DCE) Students Winning Merit Award for Tertiary Institution Category @ Green Wave National Competition 2022

Green Wave competition is an annual national competition organised by Sembcorp Marine. The competition encourages students to address a broad spectrum of environmental awareness and creative sustainability solutions among young people in Southeast Asia. The annual competition – now in its 20th run - gives students practical learning opportunities, such as taking a hands-on approach to creating solutions for the environment.
In this year’s competition more 1000 local and regional students submitted 850 projects. Representing Singapore Polytechnic, a group of DCE students (Ang Wei An, Edlyn Chia Kailing,Tang Yun, Goh Ming Xuan Joel) was awarded a Merit Award of S$1000 for their project titled “Physical Enhancement of Chitosan-Based Bioplastics for Cling Wrap Usage” by Education Minister Mr Chan Chun Sing. This project aims to discover ways to improve the physical properties of chitosan-based bioplastics for cling wrap applications, in order to increase the similarity between chitosan-based bioplastics and traditional cling wrap. The purpose of this study is to determine suitable waterproofing and strengthening additives that can be added to chitosan-based bioplastic films. This industrial project was supervised by Dr Handojo Djati Utomo (DCE), Dr Li Chunxiang and Dr Bai Shiqiang (AMTC- Advanced Material Technology Centre) with advice from and our industry partner from Mr Barnabas Chan and his staffs from Bountifood Pte Ltd. Due to covid19 restriction, only 2 student representatives can be trained by Mr Julian Kwok from LSC to improve their presentation skill.
