The art and science of crystal growing

On 27 September 2014, Diploma in Applied Chemistry with Pharmaceutical Science (DACP) students, Sheryl Wong Kar Wae and Neo Feng Yi, took part in the 11th Singapore National Crystal Growing Challenge and won the “Best Display Award” (Senior Category).

The team managed to grow single crystals of the monoclinic ammonium magnesium sulfate hexahydrate which have high clarity with well-defined faces and edges for this challenge. Judges were impressed by the display of poster, molecular model and presentation of the crystals.  They commended our students for their ability to demonstrate and explain the science and art of crystal growing down to its atomic structure. In the process of growing the crystals, the challenge has also given students the chance to discover the importance of good techniques in chemistry. Definitely a very rewarding experience!

“I took part in this competition when I was in Secondary Three and was eager to take part again as crystal growing was challenging and fascinating. I felt a sense of accomplishment when I managed to grow one with high clarity. Furthermore, I am able to apply my knowledge and lab skills gained in my modules in this challenge.”

“It was an eye-opening experience and I had a deeper understanding of physical sciences. Through this competition, I saw concepts in physical chemistry come to life & realize its importance. Although the journey was tough as we had to go to the lab every other day, we enjoyed the process. I was glad to have participated together with Sheryl, whom without her, this would not have happened.”
