DEEE Students Won 1st Place at Regional IEEE MATE ROV Competition

21 Apr 2017

DEEE Engineering Academy students, Yang Fan, Tan Hwee Peng, Chiong Kai Ming, Lee Yann Ning, Lim Wei Kheng and Teo Shyan Jie, competed against students from universities in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia to win 1st place at the IEEE MATE ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) competition held at Surabaya, Indonesia, from15-16 April 2017. Their win, which came after an intense round of competing at the pool and a rigorous technical presentation, automatically qualifies them for the main competition in California, USA in June 2017.

The ROV, a robot named RAINER, was built from scratch in less than 5 months as their final year Multi-Disciplinary Project. Controlled by an operator using a live feed from cameras on-board, and using data from several sensors and actuation of thrusters and a manipulator, the ROV had to carry out all tasks underwater involving constructing an underwater hyper loop structure, collecting environmental samples from underwater, maintaining a light and water entertainment system and identifying sunken cargo with hazardous content.
