SP teams up with Industry Partners in Advanced Manufacturing Initiatives!

20 Nov 2017

More than 250 SP staff, 200 industry guests and 1700 EEE students attended the Industry Partnership Convention (IPC) on 1st November 2017 at the Singapore Polytechnic Convention Centre. Held in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of the SP Engineering Cluster, the event showcased the strong partnership that SP engineering schools had with industry.

The event’s highpoint was the launching of the SkillsFuture Series for Advanced Manufacturing by Guest of Honour, Dr Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and National Development. SP is one of the key institutes of Higher Learning co-leading the SkillsFuture Series for Advanced Manufacturing, which is one of the eight priority and emerging skills areas unveiled by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). Supported by the Economic Development Board (EDB) and SSG, the programme aims to create a digitally-confident workforce by providing workers with relevant skills such as Industrial Internet-of-Things and Robotics Management that will be required in manufacturing operations as a result of the adoption of Advanced Manufacturing.

Another highlight was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with 14 organisations, namely, ABB, Arcstone, Beckhoff Automation, Bosch Rexroth, Contrinex, Instrumentation & Control Society of Singapore, LKH Precicon, MEDs Technologies, SEW-Eurodrive, SICK, Singapore Industrial Automation Association, SMF Centre for Corporate Learning, Siemens and Weidmuller, to launch the SP Advanced Manufacturing Partners Network. The signing, witnessed by our Guest-of-Honour, Dr Koh, and Mr Ng Cher Pong, Chief Executive of SSG, was to give impetus to the Advanced Manufacturing initiative.

The occasion also saw Dr Koh launching the EEE@60 Commemorative book, “Nurturing Curious Minds, Producing Passionate Engineers,” a publication by the school, to capture, among other things, its pioneering spirit, technological and educational innovations, the victories it scored in many competitive arenas and the transformation it wrought in the lives of some of its exemplary students.

Adding to the punch were the annual Regional Industry Networking Conference (RINC) 2017, a Gallery Walk and the Engine Room Pavilion.

RINC boasted of eleven speakers from the industry, government, academia, and solution providers who were invited to share their vast experience in various important areas associated with its theme: “Industry 4.0 – Empowering Smart Industry for Advanced Manufacturing.” Strongly supported by SP’s School of MAE, TIE, PACE Academy and Library, RINC provided a platform for participants to discuss important topics such as Digital Manufacturing, Sensor Intelligence, Collaborative Robots, Data Analytics, Industrial IoT and Cyber Security. Besides the presentations on technologies and trends by industrial leaders, there was also a concurrent exhibition by our sponsors showcasing their products, services and technological developments.

The Gallery Walk showcased students’ internship projects, LeX experiences and Social Innovation Projects while the Engine Room Pavilion sought to highlight Engineering as an exciting and attractive career option.
