DEEE student, Julian Kang, and Others to Get Hands on Experience on Smart Technologies

Under the 3 year agreements signed between 8 Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) and the Government Technology Agency (GovTech) on 13 Feb 2017, 300 IHL students will have opportunities to work on real-world tech problems through internships, attachments and final year projects with GovTech and private companies. The students will get to work in areas such as cyber security, data analytics, internet of things and other emerging technologies. These initiatives aim to develop the technology ecosystem necessary to transform Singapore into a digital economy, one of the keys to Singapore’s future success.

Year one DEEE student, Julian Kang, who is currently a Defence Science Organisation (DSO) scholar and also an SP Engineering Scholar, is one of the students who will benefit from the collaboration. Julian is ready to avail himself of the opportunities to translate his knowledge and skills into real life projects. In fact, he has developed with his friend, an electronic prototype which allows devices to be IOT ready. The prototype can, for example, be connected to lights or doors and the user can lock the door or turn on the lights with a button on his smart device. The prototype can also be programmed to record noise, moisture and even temperature at just $10 a piece, which is considerably cheaper compared to similar ones on the market.
