SP Team Won in World’s Largest and Most Prestigious Robotics Challenge!

5 students from the Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DEEE) course together with 2 others from the School of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering (MAE) and the School of Digital Media and InfoComm Technology (DMIT), participated in the RoboCup 2016 held in Leipzig, Germany, 28 June - 4 July 2016. It was an event described as “championships of intelligent robots” and where “the best of the best show what robotics can already do today.” 3,500 participants and their 1,200 robots competed for the world championship title.

The SEEE team, consisting of DEEE students, Koh Yin Yee Mabel, Yeo Wen Jing, Wu Chenzhou, Juanna Tjoa and Dinesdkumar s/o Jaya Kumaran, competed in 2 categories, the Humanoid League and RoboCup@ Work League.

The RoboCup@Work competition targets the use of robots in work-related scenarios where robots cooperate with human workers for complex tasks ranging from manufacturing, automation, and parts handling up to general logistics. In the competition, robots were assessed on their ability to carry out complex tasks such as navigating well in a goal-oriented, autonomous, robust, and safe way, and on their capabilities to manipulate such as grasping objects from a running conveyor belt and dropping objects precisely into cavities. In the Humanoid League, autonomous robots, with a human-like body and human-like senses, plan and play soccer against each other in three size classes . In the Humanoid Kid-size soccer competition, teams of four, highly dynamic autonomous robots (40-90cm height) competed with each other. In addition, they had to surmount technical challenges which took place. Several of the best autonomous humanoid robots in the world competed in the RoboCup Humanoid League.

The SEEE team spent extra hours every day to prepare for the competition. They worked in the project for two years under the supervision of their lecturers, Carlos Acosta and Asadollah Norouzi. Their hard work and efforts finally paid off when they clinched the following:
