Singapore Polytechnic’s Basic Flight Simulator Systems

In collaboration with the Republic of Singapore Airforce (RSAF) in 2014, a multi-disciplinary team of 20 students from the Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering (DARE) and Diploma in Aerospace Electronics (DASE) developed a pair of portable basic flight simulator systems which allowed members of the public to experience what flying a fighter jet was like and, hence, gain a better understanding of RSAF’s operations. As part of the authentic learning experience, the students visited Tengah Air Base, sat in a real military aircraft to study its array of avionics systems, instrument panels and flight systems, and engaged in bi-weekly discussions with RSAF representatives and monthly meetings with their lecturers. The students learnt about mechanical and aircraft structure design, advanced electrical systems, software development and project integration as well as multi-disciplinary teamwork which they would encounter when they pursue a career in the aerospace industry.

The simulators, measuring 2.7m by 1.5m with a height of 1.4m, are portable and accessible to users within the age range of six to seventy years. Weighing 300kg, they can be easily transported without heavy machinery. The simulator frame is also innovatively designed to split apart, allowing users easy access into the simulator. The software used in the simulator system was developed from scratch by using licence-free software.
