Trio wins Gold Prize at 4th Green Challenge Award 2015

Congratulations to Pravindran Elankovan, Sathesh Kumar Dorairajan and Lingeswaran Sivalingam of the Diploma in Aerospace Electronics course for winning the Gold Prize at the 4th Green Challenge Award 2015 with their project “Mobile Power Generation”. They were guided by their project supervisor, Dr Jiang Hao.

To promote green transportation and a healthy life style, the students designed and built a mobile electrical power generation system, integrated onto a normal bicycle for harnessing both pedal energy and solar energy in an effective way. Besides harnessing pedal energy with multiple generators when pedalling outdoor for transport or indoor for exercises, it also harnesses the outdoor’s free solar energy when either moving or parking.

In addition, Thia Shi Min and Ng Kuan Keat of the Diploma in Clean Energy won the Merit Prize for their project, “Smart Lights”. They developed an energy saving system for the directory board at the Chinese Garden. The system automatically increases the brightness of the directory board when someone uses it. Powered by a solar panel and a 12V battery, it is a complete stand-alone system. The green thinking applied into this product is in its ability to reduce energy usage by not having the system on for most parts of the day and wasting energy. It switches on when required or when movement is detected by the sensor.

The students were supervised by Mr Tham Kum Hong
