SP team Inertial Delivery Systems participated in the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) Innovation Challenge 2022, and emerged as one of the top four finalists, alongside Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and top junior colleges Hwa Chong Institution and Victoria Junior College. The goal this year, put forth by SLA (Singapore Land Authority) and Space Faculty, was to design a fully autonomous last-mile delivery solution to enable more reliable and faster delivery of food and parcels at lower costs, augmented with geospatial technology such as SLA’s SiReNT (a precise positioning system with accuracy of up to 3cm). The GNSS Challenge paves the way for future thinkers and innovators to develop new technology-based solutions, helping to bring young, innovative minds into the deep-tech sector.

Participant teams worked over a period of six months to fine-tune their solutions. 13 participant teams were whittled down to four finalist teams, from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Hwa Chong Institution, Victoria Junior College and SP. SP team Inertia Delivery Systems were among the top four finalist teams who presented their solutions in-person to a panel of judges at SLA.

Team Inertia Delivery Systems designed a two-wheeled robot using SLA’s SiReNT GNSS position correction system and off-the-shelf LiDAR, IMU and Cameras. This allowed their robot to navigate in Singapore’s urban environment and deliver food promptly and accurately to customers.

Year 3 DEB and DCPE students, Chong Ing Kai and Mohammed Khambhati respectively, were among the SP team, which also comprised students from MAE. Ing Kai attributed the team’s success, in part, to EEE’s DEB comprehensive syllabus. It provided him with sound technical and business background that enabled him to design a feasible robot and also make a compelling presentation pitch to SLA on the team’s work.
