"Bus Stop!” project by Year 2 Diploma in Engineering with Business (DEB) student, Raynard Chai Yu Chen has won a Merit award in the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors 2017 competition.

The Project, which uses IoT Technology - LoRa, Arduino and Mobile Application - helps bus commuters, especially the elderlies, handicapped and partially blind, to flag the bus early with a single push of a button. Today, we traditionally use our hand gesture to flag the bus and, sometimes, when we forget or are out of reach to flag the bus, we miss it. With the proposed solution, an android based mobile kiosk system will send a flag signal to the respective incoming bus, using Long Range wireless communication technology (LoRa) without relying on 3G/4G, and notify the bus driver not to skip the stop.

This is an innovative approach which allows a commuter to indicate his intention to take a bus without having to actively look out for the bus while waiting. Such data can also provide real time information on the demand for buses.
