Introduction
The proposed Specialist Diploma in Maritime Superintendency course administered by SMA offers a comprehensive training that cater to the needs of applicants who are seeking to attain the relevant knowledge and technical skills to plan, direct and coordinate the marine and technical operation from shore.
Duration of this course when do in part-time evening only is one year. If there is demand, we will also consider offering as full time short course.
Course Objective
This course is developed in alignment with the Skills Framework for Sea Transport under Technical Superintendent / Senior Superintendent and Marine Superintendent / Senior Marine Superintendent. The course syllabus is based on the critical functions key tasks and mapped with the Skills and Competencies listed in the Skills Maps of Technical and Marine Superintendents.
At the end of the course, candidates will acquire a sound understanding of the roles and responsibilities of maritime superintendent to ensure safe, economic and efficient operation of the ships and offshore vessels. They will also be able to manage and operate vessels in accordance with organisation policies, operating procedures and management systems.
Suitable For
This course is designed with the aim of skills deepening of those who have some experience in ship management operations. Candidates should have some prior knowledge of ship operation and management.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Applicants must satisfy at least one of the following entry requirements:
(i) Diploma from one of the Polytechnics (SP, NP, TP, NYP or RP) in Singapore; or
(ii) Degree from one of the Universities* (NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT, or SUSS (UniSIM)) in Singapore; or
(iii) Certificate of Competency (CoC) Class 2 issued by MPA and other authority recognised by MPA
*Applicants with degrees from other universities are considered on a case-by-case basis
Preference will be given to those with at least two (2) years of relevant working experience in marine or offshore industry from private or public sectors
Recognition of Prior Learning
When the minimum entry requirements are not met, the applicant may apply for admission by producing evidence of at least 5 years relevant working experience and recommendation from his current employer to ascertain his/her competency readiness. Applicant who are shortlisted under this category are subjected to an interview or entrance test.
The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit eligible applicants.
Course Outline
The course consists of six modules conducted over two semesters within one academic year. Classes will be conducted in three evenings per week for 15 weeks each semester.

Award / Certification / Accreditation
Upon completion of the modules in each semester, the participant will be awarded one Post-Diploma Certificates (PDC) respectively.
Upon successfully acquiring the two PDCs, the participant will be conferred the Specialist Diploma in Maritime Superintendency qualification from Singapore Polytechnic.
