WHAT YOU'LL STUDY

Business Accounting

This module will provide students with an understanding of the fundamental accounting principles underlying accounting practice, from the preparation of accounting records to the financial statements of a company. It will also cover accounting for cash, property, plant and equipment as well as Goods and Services Tax. Students will learn how to analyse and interpret a simple set of financial statements for a company.

Technology for Business

Technology is changing the way banks operate and deliver products to consumers. This module incorporates technology and applications such as RPA (Robotic Process Automation), Python coding and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications to develop a computational mindset. Students will be introduced to the relevant concepts and work on solving practical problems, including writing simple Python programmes, understanding fundamentals of AI and RPA.

Economics

Economics will provide students with an understanding of the micro and macroeconomic concepts and applications which are needed in decision-making processes in the business world. It also enables students to have a better understanding and appreciation of the larger economic environment that they are facing.

Business Essentials Through Actions 1

The module equips students with the fundamentals of business through the context of venture creation. Students will work in teams to conceive and develop proof of concepts on feasible businesses which they will carry out in BETA2. The module aims to develop students with knowledge and skills in Design Thinking and Fundamentals of Marketing where they get the opportunity to conduct empathy studies, engage in ideation and prototyping of their product/ services offerings. Through which, students learn how value propositions of their business ideas can be supported by the 4Ps of a marketing plan. Students will also get the opportunity to present their ideas to a panel of judges as they acquire presentation skills and develop confidence in presentations.

Business Essentials Through Actions 2

This module is a continuation from BETA1 where focus is placed on implementing and operating a business upon the conceived ideas. A start-up fund will be awarded to each group to help them actualise their business. Through the implementation and operating of businesses, students get to apply the skills and knowledge on Business Negotiation, Management and HR Practices as they work with suppliers and business partners, manage conflicts within their teams, conduct performance appraisals and reflect on their own experiences through an Entrepreneurship Thought and Action (ET&A) approach adapted from Babson College. With a deliberate intent to build an awareness around sustainability and corporate social responsibility, student groups get to donate their profits from the businesses to charitable organisations at the end of the module.

Business Statistics

Provides foundation for students to be equipped with quantitative skills, understanding of basic statistical concepts and their relevance in business. It is designed to train students with the statistical research skills from data analysis through manual means and software, data representation and interpretation that will allow them to make informed decisions. The statistical problem-solving process is taught as a method in addressing business-related statistical problems. Topics covered include descriptive statistics, probability distributions, sampling, estimation, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance, and linear regression.

IT & Data Analysis for Business

Provides students with the essential features of spreadsheet to support data analysis for business applications. Topics covered include spreadsheet applications, fundamental data analysis, professional presentations and proper documentation. This module will impart the necessary skills to analyse worksheet data, apply fundamental data analysis techniques to improve productivity and streamline their day-to-day operational work. Equipped with these fundamentals, students will be able to apply these skills to construct business and financial models for today’s fast changing business environment.

Education and Career Guidance 1: Personal Development

This module aims to help you discover your strengths, values and interests. It also supports you in making informed educational and career choices to achieve your career aspirations.

Digital Communication for Impact

This module aims to equip students with key skills to leverage digital communication to engage, inspire and impact stakeholders digitally. They will build an understanding of various digital communication platforms/tools and their benefits and limitations. They will also learn what it means to be a responsible Digital Citizen. Upon the completion of this module, students should demonstrate the competency to design and apply key principles when crafting impactful digital communication about United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) or a relevant context.

Thinking Critically about the UN SDGs (TCU)

This module aims to equip students with skills in critical and analytical thinking through the exploration of contemporary local and global issues, through the lens of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using information literacy skills, students will select a local issue connected to the SDGs, and look for relevant information on the issue. They will use a critical thinking framework to evaluate a diverse range of sources for their validity and reliability, and consider different perspectives in an issue before presenting their assigned stand, substantiated by reasons and evidence. This module also aims to enhance students’ knowledge and appreciation of local and global issues related to the 2030 global agenda, represented by the SDGs. Students will learn about the core principles of the SDGs and find out how the goals apply to their own lives, as well as to Singapore.

Data Fluency

This module aims to equip students with the baseline skills in using data to gain insights into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). These skills are related to the data-handling processes such as formulating data-based questions, pre-processing data and analyzing data using numerical and graphical summaries. Upon the completion of this module, students should demonstrate the competency in using data to examine one aspect of a UN SDG and/or generate some insights to support one theoretical solution to a UN SDG.

Collaboration in the Digital Age

This module aims to equip students with the skills to collaborate effectively in a team, particularly in a digital environment. This is crucial in light of the global shift to working online precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will learn about team dynamics at various stages of team development. They will use Microsoft Teams to collaborate online. They will also evaluate their own teamwork skills and that of their teammates using the CATME framework.

AI and Its Impact

This module aims to equip students with a very broad overview of Artificial Intelligence, and its societal and ethical impacts in modern society. Students will build a simple AI model with online tools and discuss how to promote good ethics in AI. Upon the completion of this module, students should demonstrate the competency of using AI to address their chosen United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG).

Persuasive Communication with Data Storytelling (PCDS)

This module aims to equip students with the baseline skills to craft compelling narratives using effective data storytelling techniques. Students will generate data visualisations, and apply narrative elements and persuasive delivery techniques to influence others or shape their perspectives. Upon completion of this module, students should demonstrate the competency in using persuasive communication to convince stakeholders intellectually and affectively to call them into action in tackling the UN SDGs.

Problem Solving with Creative & Computational Thinking (PSCCT)

This module aims to equip students with baseline creative and computational thinking skills for problem solving. Students will learn about the value of focused & diffuse thinking, problem identification and analysis, creative thinking, and the four pillars of computational thinking in the problem-solving process. Students will apply these techniques to tackle wicked problems related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Corporate Finance

The module focuses on the basic principles of modern financial management whereby learners will understand of the importance of risk and return, and the different techniques for analysing long term investments. The module will also cover short-term cash planning and working capital management and an appreciation of ESG and how finance can drive sustainability in business operations.

Financial Markets and Institutions

Introduces the features and activities in the financial markets of Singapore and the world. At the conclusion of this module students will be able to understand the roles and operations of financial institutions and other key market players, appreciate the roles of regulatory bodies including the Central Bank (MAS) in the current trend of deregulation competition and globalisation and understand the nature activities instruments/products and services of various financial markets namely primary and secondary markets money markets capital markets and derivatives markets.

Equity and Fixed Income Analysis

Provides a working knowledge of the equity and bond markets and the key players. Major equity topics include dealing mechanics, fundamental analysis and common valuation models. The module also examines the investment characteristics of fixed income securities, bond price volatility and behaviour and basic bond portfolio strategies.

Financial Regulations and Compliance

This module aims to create an awareness and to develop an understanding of the financial regulations as well as the regulatory framework related to the banking and finance industry. Students will learn the key purpose and importance of major financial regulations and compliance areas, such as Anti-Money laundering (AML) / Countering Financing of Terrorism (CFT), Fraud Prevention as well as Securities Market Misconduct and regulations. Students will also gain insights into the compliance practice and develop a compliance mind-set. The module will also introduce and explore “Regtech” that is applied in the financial regulations and compliance industry.

Predictive Analytics with AI

Provides an overview to understand how AI and Predictive Analytics is applied in the banking and finance industry. Students will learn to use KNIME as a platform to create and deploy machine learning models without writing complex codes by using simple drag and drop functionality. They will also apply programming skills in Excel VBA.

Essentials of Risk Management

The ERM module will give students a basic grasp of risks faced by financial institutions and businesses. There will be a discussion of financial crises and the role of regulation. Risks analysed in the module will include important current developments such as sustainability and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices. Risk management techniques and financial hedges will also be taught.

FinTech Innovations

This module aims to create awareness and build familiarity in Fintech by developing an understanding of disruptive innovations in the banking and finance sector. This includes Fintech’s underlying drivers, its impact on the sector, its challenges in adoption, as well as opportunities for Fintech businesses. Developments in digital banking, cryptocurrencies, payments, open banking, as well as its implications in regulations will be examined. Basic understanding on related technologies such as blockchain technology, APIs, and AI / Machine Learning will be explored. Students will also try their hands at conceptualising Fintech business ideas to address real-world problems with financial technology.

International Trade Finance

This module introduces students to the basics of trade, practical aspects of importing and exporting goods, and the various shipping documents commonly encountered in shipping goods internationally by both sea and air freights. It teaches trade terms, the various methods of payments in trade, the risks faced by traders in international trade. Students will also be exposed to INCO terms, shipping procedures and shipping terminologies.In addition, students are taught the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) “Uniform Rules for Collection” and “Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits.

Business Analytics

This module aims to introduce the basic business analytics skills to students, allowing them to gain business insights through raw data and apply this skillset across different industries. Students will have an overview of the business analytics success pillars framework. They will be using Excel to identify patterns and trends, using Dashboards for analysis and presentation and applying Linear Regression to raw data to establish relationships.

Sustainable Innovation Project

This module, tapping on what students have learnt in the Common Core Curriculum, aims to equip students with a Design Thinking mindset to create an innovative solution to tackle local societal issues mapped to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Students collaborate in multi-disciplinary groups to apply design thinking method and tools backed by research and qualitative data, to create sustainable and innovative prototype solutions for real-life issues faced by a local user in need. In the process, they develop a better understanding of themselves, and empathy for a local user in need. Students will also be able to apply their teamwork skills in the course of their sustainable innovation project, and communication skills in the presentation of the project.

Education and Career Guidance 2

ECG 2 is taken by all second year students. This module aims to develop professional skills necessary to seek and secure work. It also guides the students on how to discover and develop skills, knowledge and attitudes needed for work effectiveness and changes related to work. Topics covered in this module include ‘Job Search and Market Trends’, ‘Discovering Your Unique Selling Point’, ‘Resilience’, ‘Work Place Values’ and more.

Personal Branding and Career Agility

This module aims to equip students with the requisite skill sets, knowledge and tools that will give them an early start on the process of kick-starting their career. Through the Self-Directed Learning Approach, student-centric engagement, curated resources (eg. Learning Advisement Portal, LinkedIn Learning, and more) and curriculum co-developed by industry partners, students will begin their journey into the world of work. Upon completion of the module, students should be able to develop professional skills and build interpersonal relationships, acquire the skills to seek and secure work, develop the ability to adapt and respond effectively to changes at work, and appreciate and respect the diversity of individuals, culture and work environment.

Business Law

Commences with the basic features of the Singapore legal system. It then proceeds to introduce students to the basic principles of contract law, the Sale of Goods Act, the law of tort, cheques, agency and intellectual property. The legal aspects of business organisations will also be covered.

Treasury and Derivatives

Provides an overview of the foreign exchange market, money market, and other financial markets. Students will be introduced to the mechanics of trading in the various instruments in these markets and using these instruments for funding and investment. The module will also discuss the nature of futures markets, behaviour of futures prices and the mechanics of futures trading. Financial futures and options will be introduced as trading and hedging strategies. Students will have exposure to simulated forex and derivatives trading.

Final Year Project

Provides students an opportunity to integrate the banking and finance knowledge they have acquired from the course to work as a team to analyse issues, synthesize information and solve problems to provide customer-centric solutions.

Credit Risk Analysis and Management

Provides students with fundamental understanding of credit risk analysis including financial statement, bank statement and credit bureau analysis for both consumers and corporates. Students will also learn credit risk modelling and apply loan parameters to set up a credit risk model, features of consumer and corporate credit facilities to structure loans in a competitive way, identity and work-out problem loans and understand the importance of green loans and sustainable loans to drive sustainable outcomes.

Internship programme (with FinTech Option)

Enables students to gain professional experience through work attachments to organisations with banking or financial trading functions.

Wealth Management

Introduces the students to the principles and practices of wealth management and wealth planning. It provides an overview of financial planning concepts such as investment planning, insurance planning, tax planning, retirement planning, and estate planning. In the process, they will learn about the importance of sustainability in their analysis of financial products. Students will also learn about client relationship management on how to engage with clients at various stages of the wealth planning process, from pre-customer acquisition groundwork, fact-finding, delivery of financial plan to after-sales service. Design Thinking tools are infused into the module to create customer-centric solutions.
