DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (DBA - S71)

WHAT YOU'LL STUDY

The SP Business Administration Course is a three-year full-time programme.  In your first year, you will build a strong foundation in business studies taught through engaging pedagogies such as act-learn-build, design thinking, flipped classroom and case-based methods.  At the end of your first year, you will have the freedom to choose from three options, each dealing with a broad base of industries.  In your second year, you will deepen your skills and expertise in your chosen option whilst enhancing your business fundamentals and developing sought-after skills in business analytics, digital marketing, business operations and design thinking. Your third year is when you thrive. You will work on applied industry projects and embark on exciting internships with our industry partners who are passionate about grooming new talent.

All these will help develop you into a successful ‘T-Shaped’ graduate with depth of expertise in your respective specialties and breadth of business knowledge across essential business disciplines. The three options offered to enhance student’s skills and competencies are:

INNOVATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The Innovation & Entrepreneurship option attracts a special breed. Individuals who are focused, resilient and daring. Students will be immersed in the entrepreneurial ecosystem early in Year 2. Students will develop their entrepreneurial mind-set by taking modules in business opportunities and the innovation process. They will be taught how to identify entrepreneurial opportunities, assess financial feasibility of ventures by leveraging on business analytics, while also learning design thinking.

We adopt a student-focused approach to teaching and learning, giving students opportunities to apply what they learn. These include pitching sessions, maker's fairs, hackathons and competitions. Students will learn business fundamentals such as business strategy and planning as well as start-up finance. The course inculcates strong and sharp business acumen, risk-taking capabilities as well as effective marketing and resources management skills in ensuring business viability.

Students have the opportunity to start a real business of their own if they take up the Entrepreneurship Practicum in Year 3. This option provides the hands-on experiential learning and training towards running real business start-ups. Student entrepreneurs also benefit from financing, and access to mentorship from industry and angel investors.

The skills and competencies gained in the Innovation & Entrepreneurship option are valuable to diverse organisations including nascent start-ups, family businesses, and non-profit organisations. Graduates from this option can confidently run their own businesses, while others are sought-after in organisations that value competent and talented people who can turn ideas or projects into successful endeavours.

DIGITAL MARKETING & BRANDING
An indispensable function in any organisation, marketing helps an organisation to position its products and services in the desired image to attract and retain customers, while building and creating an organisation’s most important asset – brand equity! This is why there is a wide range of career opportunities in marketing. Students learn how to reach out to prospective customers by understanding their decision-making process. They will also be taught ways to conduct meaningful market research.

Students will also gain hands-on exposure to integrated marketing communications and digital marketing, equipping them with useful skills and knowledge needed to excel in today’s competitive business landscape. Apart from an internship programme, the students will also be involved in marketing focused client-based applied internship projects (AIP) in their final year in SP.

DBA's digital marketing & branding specialisation is designed to differentiate our graduates from others, promoting their employability as marketing professionals. DBA graduates are well positioned to start work as marketing executives. They can also pursue careers in digital marketing, social media marketing, event management, advertising and public relations.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE & OPERATIONS
Operations is the heart of any organisation, whether it offers products or services. This is true for private companies, non-profit organisations and even government bodies. For organisations focused on delivering high quality products or services internationally, having robustly run operations can have a significant impact on its global competitiveness.

This option provides students with training in operations management critical for the smooth flow of products and services between businesses and their key stakeholders. This option emphasises hands-on applications, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Students will first learn fundamental concepts in global supply chain management, enterprise business processes, as well as international trade processes and logistics operations. Then they will gain exposure to skills and technology such as process mapping, optimisation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation that are essential to modern-day operations.

Similar to the Digital Marketing & Branding option, students in Year 3 will apply their knowledge and skills on client-based final year projects. They will also embark on their internship in Year 3, during the non-studying semester.

Qualified professionals for operations-related positions continue to be in high demand globally. Students taking the International Trade & Operations specialisation can join local companies or multi-national companies as executives in diverse areas such as operation management, project management, supply chain management, procurement, and quality management. They can also serve in a wide range of fields ranging from humanitarian logistics operations to port management.
